Dentures
Depending on how many teeth you have missing, full or partial dentures are available. With partial dentures, a clasp is used to fix the denture to neighbouring teeth and are stable enough so you can eat and chew as normal. Both partial and full dentures are easily removable for cleaning. The prosthetic teeth are made from porcelain, plastic or a combination of both.
Full dentures are usually fitted after all remaining teeth have been removed and the gums are healed. However, because this does take some time, temporary dentures can be fitted in the meantime. These type of temporary dentures can also be used for a person who is waiting to have a bridge or implant fitted.
What is an implant-retained denture?
More stable than conventional dentures, those that are implant-retained use titanium implants to secure the denture into your mouth. The implants integrate with your jawbone, providing a very stable and strong foundation for your dentures that allows you to eat crunchy food and ensures good facial structure support. Because implants are a surgical procedure, not all candidates for dentures are able to have this done, but Dr. Galatis will advise you of the best option for your individual circumstance.

What should you expect when getting dentures?
You will need a few appointments to get your dentures made and fitted. If you’ve had teeth removed, you’ll need to wait for any swelling to go down and for healing to be complete before impressions can be taken. During the appointment when your impressions are taken, Dr. Galatis will assess what teeth and gum colour will be appropriate for your complexion, ensuring your dentures look as natural as possible.
Once your dentures are fitted, it can take a few weeks for you to adjust to speaking and eating with them. Additionally, your dentures will need to be adjusted from time to time because your jaw alignment naturally changes due to the bone and gum ridges receding without teeth. Regular visits to check on your dental health will ensure that any adjustments can be made quickly, and that your gum and oral health is maintained.
What are the benefits of dentures?
No dental surgery is required and they can be easily replaced if they are damaged for any reason.
Dentures are more affordable than implants, and if your bones have shrunk too much, they may not be able to support implants. Dental implants can also take between three to six months to fully integrate with the jawbone, depending on the patient. Diabetes or the habit of smoking may also impede bone integration and healing.
