Fissure sealing is a popular treatment used on kids which allows them to live their childhood cavity free!
About 90% of decay starts in the fissures (grooves on the tooth surface). The problem with these grooves is that they are often very narrow and deep and no amount of brushing can clean them. The plaque lies in these recesses and begins to its decaying process. The fissure soon starts to appear dark and eventually a small cavity will be formed.
Fissure sealants are a method of closing up these natural recesses thus preventing the plaque from gaining entry .They are made out of a plastic material which is applied to the biting areas of molars and premolars painlessly. The sealant bonds into the pits and fissures of the chewing surfaces and protects the tooth enamel from acids, plaque and decay. These are probably the most effective direct way of preventing tooth decay. They are beneficial to children as well as adults.
How is it applied?
Teeth are cleaned
The molar surfaces are roughened
The sealant is applied onto the teeth and bonds to the roughened area
The sealant hardens with the help of an ultraviolet light
